Primary Care

To expand team-based primary care the federal government created the $800M Primary Health Care Transition Fund (2000-06). In Ontario, Dietitians of Canada created and I chaired the Primary Health Care Action Group. We obtained funding for a demonstration project to place three Registered Dietitians into 3 primary care clinics, that had not previously had RD services. Several papers came out of that initiative, including advocacy documents, research, costing and effectiveness data. Many of the methods developed apply to current work. More recently, we developed a Patient Experience Questionnaire for lifestyle programs, and colleagues have examined exercise counselling by RDs and prenatal nutrition care.
